Q: Can I visit an inmate in the jail?
A: In order for you to visit an inmate, at the Dawson County Jail, you must first register on www.visitel.us. Once accepted you will be allowed to schedule onsite (or online) visits. You must schedule onsite visits at least a day in advance.
Q: Where do I pick up an inmate when they are released?
A: Released inmates will exit through Night Entry. Night Entry is located on the west side (Washington St) of the jail in between the courthouse and jail .
Q: Can I pick up an inmate's property?
A: You may pick up inmate property (cell phone, keys, driver's license, etc.) during visitation hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 8:30AM-11:30AM and 1:30PM-4:00PM. You MUST have an ID to receive an inmate's property.
Q: How can I place money on an inmate's account?
A: You can deposit money on an inmate's account during visitation hours. We accept cash or money orders. You can also send a money order through the mail.
Q: Can I drop off inmate property including, white socks, shirts, etc.?
A: We will not accept any articles of clothing, including "whites." Inmates have the option of ordering them through commissary. In rare occasions, clothing may be accepted if the inmate is being released or transferred to another agency and does not have the weather appropriate attire in their property. This will need to be approved by a supervisor. Please call the jail to get it approved.
Q: Can I call an inmate?
A: No. Inmates may not receive incoming phone calls. Inmates are allowed to make collect phone calls any time the dayroom, in the pod, is open.

MEDICAL QUESTIONS
Q: Can I bring an inmate's prescription eyeglasses or prescription contact lenses to him/her?
A: Yes, just bring the glasses to the visitation lobby, during visiting hours. Prescription glasses and reading glasses are permitted, Prescription contact lenses MUST be brought in sealed/untampered boxes.
Q: Do Inmates have access to medical care or prescription medication?
A: Yes. All inmates have access to medical records for a current inmate. ONCE the inmate is released from custody, our medical dept. will release medical records to a medical physician for "Continuation of Care." The patient must fill out a "release of information" form with their physician's office and have them fax it to our nurse at 308-324-9829.
Q: How do I drop off medications to my friend/family member?
A: Prescription medications can be brought to the Visitation lobby or Night Entry when visitation is closed for an inmate currently in custody. The prescriptions must go through a verification process and pass in order to be accepted by medical staff.
This includes:
-Original prescription bottle
-Legible prescription label on bottle, including the inmate's name that matches what the detention facility has on file
-Current prescription (filled within 30, 60, or 90 days, depending on the order)
-ALl pills inside the bottle must be the same size, color, shape, etc.
-Must be a medication that is provided inside the facility by facisilty medical and mental health providers
-Medical staff have the right to refuse medications that do not meet all criteria
Q: Do inmates have access to medical care or prescription medication?
A: Yes. All inmates have access to medical care including mental health. If an inmate has a current prescription medication, medical staff will verify the prescription prior to administering the medication. You may bring an inmate their person prescription if it is sealed by a pharmacy.
Q: I need my medications called into my pharmacy. I was released from custody and I was receiving while in the Dawson County Jail, what should I do?
A: You will be given at least two weeks of medication, as you must see a medical doctor upon release from custody.
Q: I want o know what is going on with my family member/friend can you please tell me?
A: The medical department is not obliged to answer ANY medical questions that family members or friends have regards to a patient in custody at the Dawson County Sheriff's Office. The Medical department takes HIPAA rules and regulations very seriously, therefore, will not release any information on a patient's status over the phone. If a family member or friend has information to provide to the medical staff, the information will gladly be taken and noted in the patient's chart. A Medical Power of Attorney does not qualify for medical information to be released over the phone in regards to a patient's medical status

Q: How do I send mail to an inmate?
A: Inmates may receive mail. All mail must have a full return address on the envelope and be addressed as below. All mail will be searched for contraband. All mail that has drawings, pages glued together, decorative items or greeting cards will be photocopied. The copy will be given to the inmate and the original will be put into the inmates property, which will be given to them at the time of there release.

A: Yes. However, the greeting card will be photocopied. The original will be placed in the inmates property and the copy will be given to the inmate.
Q: What magazines can I send to an inmate?
A: You can secure a subsription to a magazine and have it sent directly from the publisher. We do not accept magazines from individual or bookstores. Although we don't provide a list of preapproved magazines, it will be given to the recipient if it does not include content that is deemed unacceptable.
